European Week of Regions and Cities

For a strong EU cohesion policy beyond 2020

The Opening Session has focused on the main topics of the 2018 EU Regions Week. This interactive session touched on important topics regarding youth, cities, regions and cohesion. Let’s analyse it.

Communication starts with a smile

The opening Session was run in six languages (German, English, Spanish, French, Italian and Polish). EU citizens, who do not speak fluent English, could choose a different language. By having these choices, the organisers made sure the conference is accessible and easy to follow. The conference started in a very positive manner, stating that ”communication starts with a smile.”

This event was held in the heart of Brussels, the SQUARE. The wifi was free to access, which made it easier for journalists to follow and produce real-time reports. Participants seemed actively involved and have been busy with typing and taking notes. The place was filled with experienced journalists from many EU member states. Young journalists were given the opportunity to attend different sessions too, and network with EU professionals.

EU next to you

Two of the most important topics in this session:

  • Future – youth, cities and regions

At present, the effects of European funds are present in every EU member state. According to the European Commission, with a budget of €373 billion in commitments for 2021-2027, the future Cohesion Policy has the investment power to help bridge the gaps between and within EU countries. Cohesion holds Europe in unity. Cooperation is better than independent work. Thus, the EU has supported in developing several projects such as Danube River Research and Management in Austria, Leuven’s Bio-Incubator in Belgium, Gabrovo Clean Water Supply in Belgium, Inclusion in Cypriot Schools, Expansion of Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia and many more. But, together we can do even more, that was the overall message from several EU professionals during their opening sessions.

In 2017, a debate on the future of Europe was launched. The advice was to actively listen to EU supporters, but the sceptics as well. Europe is every region, not just Brussels, highlighting unity. Each member state is special in its own way, through its national heritage, language, religion, customs…Everyone wants its traditions and history to be respected. The European Union does not replace nations – it works with them. There are many initiatives in which we, as Europeans, can take part.

Development is important

The European Union is also investing in energy efficiency and renewable sources. Without EU funding, countries would have a more difficult task. In real life, the EU is present, willing to help citizens. Support is given not only to regions and cities but also to individuals. A huge investment in the development of the European Union is being made, above all the cohesion of its members. Cohesion Policy plays a leading role.

Sustainable urban development has also become a priority in recent years. It could be said that European funds are influencing innovation and are enabling rapid development.

You can help

Regions and municipalities are important for the European Union. There is a need for a sustainable economy. The European Union wants the citizens of the member states to participate, that is also another priority for the future of Europe. Citizens can work together too. The European Union gives a lot, and you?
